GeneXpert (TB-PCR) testing

A rapid molecular test that finds TB in a sputum sample and shows whether it is resistant to rifampicin, a key TB medicine. Results are usually ready within a few hours.

Free of charge

Ask your doctor or district chest clinic whether a GeneXpert test is right for you. The test is provided free by the national programme.

Section 1 of 4

What is GeneXpert?

GeneXpert is an automated machine that tests sputum for the genetic material of the TB germ. It detects TB more reliably than smear microscopy, especially when there are only a few germs in the sample.

In the same test it shows whether the germ is resistant to rifampicin, so people with drug-resistant TB can start the right treatment straight away.
